Being surrounded by "academically ambitious" students and teachers kept George Garcia grounded in high school. Even though he lived in several homes as a teenager, his school proved to be one of the only constants in his life. The National Association for Gifted Children reports that a quarter to half of the gifted students are lost in the shuffle, due to children living in foster care or having disadvantaged backgrounds.
"Because while my home life was shifting so much, I felt a sense of stability at school and something to concentrate on," said Garcia, who was in the foster care system from age ten until he aged out.
